it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Writing for the reader! Books model how to do this! I teach second grade in a low- socioeconomic school. We are a title 1 school, but this does not stop us. We, the staff and students, work very hard to make the time we have each school day as productive as possible.
"I have nothing to write about" say some students, but NOT ANYMORE!!! Students will be writing small moment stories that are narrowed and focused and really let the reader in on all the thoughts, feelings, details, just as if the reader was really there!
Just like in math, students need great models of writing to learn from. When students make connections to books that are read aloud, and see the writing strategies that real authors use, students feel that they can do it too! You can not teach a child to write a story without great examples of stories. A unit that we focus on in second grade is 'Writing for Readers'. In this unit we share books that make the reader really understand what is going on in the story, really feel the excitement or emotion being portrayed by the author. Students see many, many examples of how real authors accomplish this task, making it easier for students to make the connection to their own stories, and make their stories easier for the reader to read.
Your caring gift will allow my kiddos to find all their inner stories that they never knew they had, and to really let the reader see inside of the story, and experience what the author (the student) is sharing!
