Bringing Literacy into a Science Classroom

My students need Super Science from Scholastic to expand their literacy in our science classroom.

My Students

Our classroom is your typical science room, with large lab desks, counters, and sinks. What is different about our science class, is that literacy and writing has become the focus of what we do every day prior to lab activities. Our biggest challenge is that we do not have engaging text.

My students are excited for science because they enjoy the hands-on lab activities and experiments.

However, the Next Generation Science standards are embedded with literacy goals that they need to achieve. Our school is located in a small community of Northern Michigan where a majority of our student population is Title I. They come from diverse family backgrounds and sometimes literacy is not modeled at home, especially in regards to reading science text. Students in my classroom are hungry for exciting articles that talk about every day science and current events that can lead into our various lab experiments.

My Project

Students in our classroom will read Super Science, colorful and engaging articles from Scholastic. They will practice talking to the text and doing think alouds, two strategies that help students comprehend what they are reading. They will write and reflect on the articles, as well as summarize and make connections to the real world. The activities students will do with Super Science will lead into lab experiments, inquiry, and exploration. My hope is that the articles will inspire students to practice engineering design and create fun experiments.

Donations will improve our classroom for many reasons.

We do not have text books and having compelling information from Super Science will allow our students to read up-to-date articles and experiments that are interesting and engaging. It will allow them to practice literacy skills in the science classroom to improve upon their reading and writing. It will change their lives because it will allow them to read about real world science experiences that might help them choose science careers.
