We are a first grade inclusion classroom in Ohio. About 1/3 to 1/2 of the room has special needs. Our class also has English Language Learners and at risk students.
We are in need of good poetry books we can read. Poetry has an important role to develop a child's reading and writing ability. My students love poetry, however a lot of the poetry they are exposed to they can't always read. We need poetry books that are easy to read and cover topics that are interesting to first graders.
Poetry books can build students ability to read because its is fun and not as threatening as a book. It can be used to build confidence in struggling readers, which my class has a large portion of, and inspire struggling writers. I have children who struggle to write a story but will write poetry everyday because they enjoy it and it is not as overwhelming.
This list of poetry books contains over 50% of poetry books they will be able to pick up and read themselves. The rest of the books will provide my students good mentor texts to write poetry.
We will start our Poetry Workshop in October. Each week on Friday we will study a certain aspect of poetry and then spend the rest of our time writing poetry based on poetry we have read as a class or a poem they have found in a book. This is where our request comes in, while our class has a good foundation of poetry books, we lack ones that have readability for first graders. By funding this grant we will have over 50 books to use and READ in poetry workshop rather than the one or two a table that have to be share we have now. This will greatly expand our expertise and knowledge of poetry and make us better readers and writers.
Poetry is a genre that is too often overlooked or only studied in the month of April. Poetry can be the hook for your struggling readers and writers than can build their confidence in reading and writing. Poetry is welcoming and fun and students love it. It should be read and studied everyday so that students can enjoy it. Please fund this grant to build my students skills in reading and writing and make them poets at an early age.
