This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 21 inner-city second graders in Washington, D.C. My students are bright, energetic, and eager to learn. One of the most important for second graders to learn is to read fluently. Research shows that the more fluently a student reads a text, the more they understand that text. Reading poetry is a great way to increase a student's reading fluency. This is where I need your help.
In order to provide my students with more opportunities to read poetry I would like to purchase a poetry library for my classroom. I would also like to purchase a set of poetry journals, which will allow me to take my students exposure to poetry a step farther. The journals ask students to read a poem and then answer questions about it, so students are reading and exploring their understanding of poems in a fun an exciting way.
Second graders learn many things over the course of a year. One of the most important things is to read fluently. The best way for them to become more fluent is to read poetry. Your help in purchasing both the poetry collection for our library and the student poetry journals for daily use will allow my student to become readers that are more fluent and to gain a deeper understanding of poetry in general.
Thank you for time and consideration.
