Katrina Team Struggles to Come Back

My students need a Sony camcorder with media and a roll cart.

I am the only middle school and high school girl's basketball coach who coaches basketball to all female students in our district grades 7-12. Our school district was severely hit by Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005. We are a high need community trying to recover from this unprecedented storm and at the present time 100% of our students receive free lunch.

In May of 2005, before Hurricane Katrina, our girl's basketball team won the state championship for the state of Mississippi. In order to get to that level, our team would watch game film to help enhance their playing ability. We had one camcorder and we would also share it with other teams and teachers throughout our district. We are trying slowly to recover and we really need a camcorder to record games and enhance building fundamental skills throughout our program. Also, we will share this camcorder with other coaches and teachers to enhance learning within their programs. A camcorder and roll cart to carry our supplies would benefit students in grades 7-12 in our district. Other teams would also benefit from your donation.

Because of the limited resources and supplies in our district, we truly have to rely on donations to help us recuperate from this storm. Most of our population lived in FEMA travel trailers after Katrina and housing is limited. With this donation, all sports teams in our district will be allowed to use this camcorder and supply cart to help build fundamental skills with their players. Research proves that sports programs help decrease the drop-out rate and with the use of camcorders and a supply cart, students can refine their ability to become better athletes by watching themselves on camera. Using film also provides a great teaching tool for teachers and coaches.

Two schools in our district are still in FEMA trailer classrooms. As we continue to make progress after Hurricane Katrina, we ask that you consider our proposal. Our school and community truly thanks our donors for helping our students have a brighter future. God Bless.
