Our 5th grade class is curious about the weather and why it happens, and as part of our science curriculum, we study weather and climate. A classroom weather station would help us "see" and record what's actually going on. A weather station would also benefit our school as we have a morning news cast and could offer "live" weather from our own source.
We are a school with 95+% of our students on free or reduced lunch and items such as this fall a bit lower on our wish list than do texts and other supplies. My classes have always appreciated hands-on activities and a weather station would provide them with that and much more.
My wish is to have a weather station that will allow students to make and record our live weather conditions. As we build a knowledge base, we'll go into predicting our weather based on this gathered information. This also falls within our science teaching curriculum and state standards.
Being able to actively (through direct observation and hands-on activities) study a subject has been one of the best ways to learn (and teach) that I have found. This weather station would provide that and more--and would actually be fun to do!
I feel it will be an excellent and lasting investment for our class and school as we will use it for many years to come.
