"Energy, Will we run out? What are our alternatives?" This is the question that my students are given at the beginning of the year. By the end of the year they will be able to tell you.
I teach 6th grade science. The school is a Title 1 school with 80% free lunches. We are currently striving to develop hands on activities that will improve the achievement of our students with low socioeconomic status.
Alternative energy is an extremely important and relevant topic for today's students. As more emphasis is placed on improving these resources, students need to be aware of their choices and how each alternative energy source works. The use of alternative energy is directly related to student's futures, as this energy will undoubtedly replace the methods used today. Due to socioeconomic students have no access to real life examples of these types of energy. Books are a wonderful resource but hands on are a much better way to get students to have a full understanding.
The renewable energy kits that I have requested will allow students to construct miniature models of water, wind, and solar energy production. They will be able to interact with the models instead of being limited to looking at pictures in a book. The building of the models will also give them ownership of the energy sources. The booklets will give them information about each energy source that they will need to answer the questions about Energy.
There are some topics that can be taught without models and manipulatives. This is not one of those topics. These forms of energy WILL impact our students' lives for generation to come. Students must know what's out there and how it can benefit their lives. With your help we can accomplish that goal. We are ALL in this together. Who knows, one of my students may be the one who finds a solution to our Energy crisis.
These activities will give them the knowledge that they will need to answer their question.
