This high school science classroom is located in a small rural K-12 school in southeast Missouri. We serve about 300 students, many with agricultural backgrounds. I serve as the science department for our high school, teaching students in grades 10 through 12 Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Ecology, and Zoology. This request will benefit my Ecology students.
My classroom lacks materials that would help increase student literacy and environmental awareness. The school cannot afford to purchase text books for this class so I supplement from several sources including my college text and the Internet. I would love to include Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" as one of these sources. "Silent Spring" is one of Carson's seminal works, in it she delivers her message of just how fragile our environment is in a vivid, beautiful, and effective manner that I know my students will be readily able to relate to.
Increasing student’s literacy has long been a goal our district and I hope to provide students with a cross-curricular experience that will enhance their appreciation of the written word and the nature of science in the real word. A classroom set of Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" will allow me to provide my students with the tools they need to make this goal a reality. My past students have been hungry for more information on the environment and what they can do to help save it in light of the current scientific evidence regarding global climate change. I feel this book can act as a spring board for discussion and action.
Your help will not only provide my students with a beautifully written literary experience, it will also galvanize within them a passion for protecting our fragile environment.
