A Room with a View

My students need seven mobile conference tables.

What I have realized about teaching Southern Appalachian public high school students is that the teacher's essential task is that of expanding the students' horizons in order to increase their options. My students range from ninth through twelfth grade, from repeating students with foster parents and probation officers to AP English students who dream of Duke, and from descendants of Principal Chiefs of the Cherokee tribe, to Latino immigrants' children, to descendants of the Scots-Irish straight out of Ulster. What they all have in common is that they have had little exposure to a realistic depiction of the world outside this geographically and economically isolated region. The exposure they have had is often through cable television and MTV,and this means their view of the world and themselves is skewed by the commercialism of a culture that has marginalized Native Americans and Appalachians for centuries.

Our rural county, with 86% of the land either National Park, National Forest, or part of a nearby Native American reservation, has an abysmal tax base (14%), and our already small school budget was more than halved this year because of budget cuts from the state and federal government. The tables I am requesting are simply not in the school's budgetary possibilities, and they would replace the desks we currently use that are too small for high school students, inadequate as a work space, and both too bulky and time consuming when we try to move them together. These factors make mobile folding tables the ideal for creating a physical classroom structure that allows for collaboration and encourages the sharing of ideas.

I need seven of these tables to accommodate my biggest classes (the largest of which is about 28 students). The tables would encourage students' creativity through collaboration and create space for laptops (that we borrow from the library), thus letting us make instant connections to the world outside our mountain county. Changing the arrangement of the classroom would allow students to function in an environment that fosters mutual effort. This kind of teamwork approach, in turn, creates a closer replication of the 21st century global society with which my students desperately need an increased familiarity.

The bottom line is this: seven inexpensive plastic tables would permit 60-70 students each semester a much greater access to the workings and possibilities contained in the larger world that exists outside our Appalachian mountain town.
