Our Brooklyn 7th grade special education classroom is ready to move to high Level 3s and 4s with a little help from Ernest Hemingway!
My classroom library lacks literature of any real substance. I've heard people say that today's students don't care about the classics. I disagree! I know that my students will see the beauty in The Old Man and the Sea, just as generations of readers have before them. The Old Man and the Sea is a perfect starting point for us because of Hemingway's short, beautiful sentences. I currently have no classroom literature set, and this is one that we could enjoy and share with other classes as well.
Struggling readers do best when they are equipped with interesting, easy to read text, guided practice, and the opportunity to share their learning. By providing us with a class set of The Old Man and the Sea, and audio copies, you will ensure that my students have the opportunity to challenge themselves with classic literature, guided classroom practice, and the opportunity to share their experience with Hemingway's Pulitzer Prize winning work in our classroom community.
Your help will ensure that my students have exposure to an American masterpiece, while improving their ability to read and comprehend literary text. Enough of the low expectations; help me to expect the very best from my students. It may not seem like much, but the opportunity to develop serious literary discussion around one text as as a class could just mean the difference between a Level 2, and a high Level 3 or 4 this year. My students have set their own expectations high this year; please, help us get there!
