Help Mrs. Elledge

I am a second grade teacher in a rural southeast school. Our science curriculum covers the life cycles of insects. It would be a wonderful hands on experience for the students to see a butterfly life cycle in action and to do a butterfly release in our school garden.

Our school is in a community hit hard by unemployment due to the closing of many mills in our area. Families have little money to spend on extras like science kits or field trips to educational enrichment sites. This grant would supply an opportunity for me to engage the students in a real life experience.

It is my hope to provide each second grade student with the book "Where Butterflies Grow". The book has wonderful illustrations and easy to read text of the butterfly life cycle. It also goes into the steps on planting a butterfly garden. The students will then be able to share their book with their families. Each second grade classroom will have a butterfly kit to watch and to document in a science journal the metamorphosis of the butterfly. When our butterflies are ready we will have a grade level release into the school garden.

Your help will ensure that my students will have an enriching hands on experience with the life cycle of the butterfly. Hands on science is a luxury to these students and a great opportunity to construct learning that will carry into future science exploration.
