This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
It is always amazing to me that under-performing schools are not considered for the most critical materials. I teach Grade 4 in an elementary school in Albany in which the students do not have a Science lab available for their use. Students don't have the opportunity to explore and use Science related materials that will increase their understanding in science as well as prepare them for the state exam that is given in grade 4.
On many occasions I have found myself very frustrated on several levels while teaching Science. Many times we read about a great experiment in our text book, but I am often forced to say, "We don't have the materials to do this experiment."
Science is supposed to involve exploring and being able to experiment and work with materials to spark interest and discovery. However, without the necessary materials, Science is dry and boring for many students. We are in need of many useful materials that will allow the teachers to show that Science is intriguing and endless in the possibilities for learning. We want students to move away from the act of observation to the concept of the scientific method. We want them to develop critical thinking and questioning skills. We want to challenges problem solving skills and present a variety of visual and tactile experiences.
These are the types of items that we are asking for our grade 4 classrooms: These materials will be shared and used to in a lab like setting. Students will rotate in and out of the labs using the various items mentioned below which relate to the topic of study. Students will have the opportunity to have a " hands on approach" with real lab materials. These items will benefit the students for many years since the material are reusable.
magnets
electricity kit
clipboards
microscopes
microscope slides
cylinders
animal classification cards
plant classification cards
chemistry kit
hand lenses
lab/materials kit
thermometers
Please consider our proposal the materials requested would be a value to our students for many years.
