I teach kindergarten in a high poverty neighborhood where the majority of parents work full time, oftentimes at more than one job. At the pre-K night last year, many parents expressed a desire to help with classroom activities, but wondered if there was anything that could be done at home in the evenings.
The parent requests have lead me to write this grant for scissors and clear pouches to give to adults at the morning drop off and afternoon pick up with supplies and samples of projects that they can help cut and prepare at home.
Since many parents at our school do not speak English, I have concluded that this method will be an effective and successful way for all parents who do not have time to come to the classroom during the day to participate in the school. My goal is to build an avenue for them to contribute their time and energy--creating a sense of ownership in the classroom and the school. Additionally, I am sure that the students will be thrilled each time they complete a project that their family helped prepare at home!
