My project needs a ballroom dance instructor that will come out to the school for 12 one hour sessions and teach 32 students how to ballroom dance. The goal is to get students to work together cooperatively and learn to trust each other.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I teach language arts and science at the junior high level.
I have 32 seventh graders who would benefit from having dance in the classroom. Not only would it benefit them physically and stimulate them mentally, but would also help them to learn how to work with each other.
Unfortunately, students hesitate to work in groups if their friends are not with them. I want to teach them the importance of working with others in the classroom and as a lifetime skill.
I would like to have a professional dancer come and work with my students and teach them dances they are unaccustomed to (like swing, rumba, foxtrot, etc.). As a class, we will also research and engage in dialog about the dances we learn.
As a culminating activity, we will share and perform our newfound knowledge and skills with our school at a school assembly.
I was very fortunate that someone funded this for me last year and I cannot begin to explain what impact it had on my students. After every dance class, we sat down and discussed what we learned, our frustrations, and celebrations. We became closer as a classroom and truly understood what it means to trust someone.
My 7th grade was the highlight of last year's end of the school year assembly. They worked hard and were proud of their performance as well as how well they worked together. I would love this year's 7th grade to experience this as well. I know that this experience will leave a beneficial impact on my students.
