Every summer I mail out a supply list to my incoming 5th grade students' families. I request that each child bring in all of the supplies on the list on the first day of school. However, working in a high-poverty school where over three-quarters of my students qualify for free lunch, I know it's hard for their families to provide them with what they need to start school. While there are always a few kids whose parents can provide them with all of the supplies, they are in the minority.
Please note: students use communal supplies in my classroom. That means all of the children share pencils, lined paper, sticky notes, art supplies, etc. Communal supplies save students time since they don't roam around asking, "May I borrow your _____?" Further, communal supplies eliminate distractions since materials are stored in a central location of the classroom so there is less in and on students' desks. Plus, knowing that we have a cache of supplies in the classroom closet provides a sense of security to all of my students since they know they won't have to ask their parents to buy them more school supplies midyear when their personal supply runs out.
Due to the financial hardships that nearly all of my students' families face, I desperately need your help to make sure all of my new students can start school with brand new supplies. Starting the year with new supplies like two-pocket folders, pens, notebooks, etc. donated by you will make them productive and prepared from the very first moment they set foot inside my classroom. Plus, it will even the playing field since they'll have everything they need to set them up for success.
