Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Brooklyn International High School is one of nine international schools in New York City that caters to newly immigrated teens to the city. All students entering the school are English language learners and have lived in the United States for less than two years. Combined, there are more than 20 languages/countries represented at the school. It is a great environment for this group of students and the drop out rate is minimal, graduation rate is extremely high, and 100% of the graduates get accepted to a college and many receive scholarships.
Unfortunately, our school is one of four schools that uses an old torpedo factory near the Brooklyn Navy Yard as our building. That being said, there is a lack of facilities -- functional gyms (for basketball, volleyball, etc.) and fields for athletic competitions. The teams that exist at the school are ones that require no true facilities at the school to operate and there are very few of them.
To keep the students busy and active after school, we have numerous clubs and activities, but I feel that one important, desired one is missing -- a Ping Pong/Table Tennis Club. We have one table that is falling apart and for the short time the gym teacher is in the 'dropped-ceiling' gym after school, there is a line of Chinese, Polish, Bengali, and Mexican students to play. There simply is not enough time or space for them all to play and keep busy -- many students stay at our school as long as we let them as it is a safe place for them, and they truly feel welcomed and comfortable there. So, I desire two more Ping Pong/Table Tennis tables to organize and maintain a club for the students a few days a week for the duration of the school year.
This club will be a great addition to our school and I have no doubt that it will be well received by all.
