I teach energetic second graders in a small charter school in a predominantly low-income community in downtown Los Angeles. 100% of my students receive free lunch because their families earn below the federal poverty guidelines. I teach my students ALL subjects in TWO languages (English and Spanish): reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, handwriting, computer literacy, health, nutrition, personal development and responsibility, and social etiquette. My students learn so much!
Imagine the amount of work that is generated throughout the year: the writing and drawings my students produce, the resource materials that support what they're learning, their completed and graded assignments, and so much more. What should my students do with all their work? I want them to be able to refer back to their work as their learning experiences build upon each other. Sending their work home in their backpacks is not the right answer! They should organize their work in fabulous binders with index tabs that they can keep at school!
Having a binder for their work will allow my students to learn how to categorize and organize their work. They will learn how to refer back to previous work to support their current learning. My students will learn simple organizational skills that will help them become better students. My students need these binders!
Organizational skills are necessary in order to successfully negotiate our multi-faceted modern world. Organizational skills are important skills that my students must learn as they prepare to be leaders of our future. Second grade is the perfect time to begin teaching students how to organize their work and their ideas. Having these binders and index tabs will support my students in practicing these organizational skills that are so important for their development as successful students.
