Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In my eyes, no sight is more beautiful than a class full of students engrossed in reading. Imagine a classroom in which all students take the same book home every night and discuss the novel the next day in class...where students eagerly analyze literature for plot structure and theme...and where students read dozens of chapter books a year...you can help make this picture a reality! I teach reading to fabulous fourth graders at Ralph J. Bunche Elementary School in Compton, California. We are a Title I School in which all of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our student body is half African-American and half Latino. For the past two years, generous donors have revolutionized my classroom by funding class sets of literature that my students love. Rather than reading excerpts from the state-provided reading curriculum, my students are reading and analyzing children's classics like Maniac Magee and Number the Stars. Observing the students' excitement while reading these books has been a truly wonderful experience. This year, I would like to expand that reading project. Our fourth graders love reading, and I'm working hard to increase both their proficiency and their engagement. The materials requested in this proposal are class sets of two books ("How to Eat Fried Worms" and "Cricket in Times Square") that will enable me to ensure that my students have enriching material to read and discuss in class. Additionally, by providing a class set, you will give our students the opportunity to take the books home at night to continue their reading. The next day in class, we will do enrichment activities based on the prior evening's reading. I hope that all my students will achieve grade-level proficiency in reading this year, but more importantly, I hope that they will develop a love of reading. Your support of our star readers through this proposal will make a huge difference in our classroom. Thank you for your care and generosity.
