This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of us have fond memories of being curled up in the lap of an adult as they read a favorite children's book. Unfortunately, most of my kindergarten students come to school having never had that experience. A Nook e-reader will help us learn to read!

We are a class of twenty-one students in a small school on the outskirts of a town in central California.

Our school district is comprised of only two schools, so funding for resources is limited to say the least. In our classroom, we speak English; however, at home many of my students speak Spanish, Punjabi, or Arabic. With so many students learning to speak English, a Nook e-reader would be a resource that could read to the children. With a unique Read To Me feature, the words at the bottom of childhood favorite books such as "Chick Chick Boom Boom" light up as the device models reading the corresponding words to the kids.

My Project

Recently I was in line at the grocery store and the toddler in the cart behind me was flipping through the applications on his father's I-Phone with ease. Kids today are primed and ready to use technology. We just added our first Nook to our classroom and it is an instant hit! It is my deepest desire the completion of this project will add to what will be a collection of eight e-readers, so that my students may have access to them while not working directly with me.

This Nook will be an invaluable tool in teaching my students a skill they will use their whole life long.

By supporting our project, you will instill a love of reading in the hearts of not only the students currently in my room, but countless others who will enter in the future. Reading is the gateway to a good education and my children stand ready to begin their journey and your contribution will help unlock the gate. Will you please help us?
