My Students

My forty-four remedial English students are from low-income, minimally educated, immigrant families. Many live in crime-ridden neighborhoods where gang violence riddles their streets with gunshot, police sirens, and muggings.

"Thug life" is upheld as a model for rebelling against the inequities and condescension that my students endure.

Somehow these kids have been passed up through the system, even though their reading skills are at a second to fifth grade level. By the time they have reached high school, they feel so alienated and disenfranchised that many truly believe they will never succeed...at reading, or school, or anything considered "acceptable" by our society. Literacy is sometimes considered a code that only rich white people understand. In my classroom, however, students have had a chance to choose books that they consider interesting and accessible. Many have read an entire book on their own for the first time, and others are reading five or more books per semester.

My Project

Luis J. Rodriguez’s memoir, "Always Running", is a favorite among my students. They can relate to the problems of gang violence, drug abuse, poverty, and injustices in our educational system that Rodriguez so aptly describes. Some students view Rodriguez as a hero and role model who has achieved success despite his ignoble beginnings. And on June 10th, Rodriguez has agreed to speak to my students about his experiences growing up in East LA and struggling to make his voice heard as a novelist and poet. In preparation for this field trip, we've been reading and writing poems, memoirs, and short stories about our lives, dreams, and goals. We’ve also visited the Museum of Tolerance and discussed issues of prejudice in our world. Now we are working on analyzing literature to learn how other people, including Rodriguez, solve problems, and to practice writing essays in preparation for college.

I would use this field trip as a culminating event to mark off an entire year about literacy and empowerment and to inspire my students to reach high and work hard to succeed.

This field trip will reward students for their hard work in figuring out how to solve problems they encounter in life, and analyzing how to succeed with reading and writing.
