This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Wimpy Kid books? Are you kidding? What about the classics? What about the Hardy Boys? What about Nancy Drew? What about the Boxcar Children? Forget it! The current craze is Wimpy Kid. What about Harry Potter? Not in 2011. All the kids ask for is Wimpy Kids books.

The K-5 elementary students at our public school are primarily Hispanic.

Students are able to read, speak, or write English at their grade level. The school is in an urban, high poverty, high crime area. Students are eager to learn and have a culture that values education. A large number of parents walk their children to school each morning. Many walk their child right to their classroom. In the afternoon, dozens of parents are waiting for their child outside of the school.

My Project

I am the computer teacher who has a lab in the library, so I am also the librarian. I see grades one through five all day long. 600 kids a week. There is only one series of books they ask for, ""Wimpy Kid," "Wimpy Kid," and more "Wimpy Kid."" I don't have to be a genius to know that I need to request from Donors Choose "Wimpy Kid" books. Why "Wimpy Kid"? Why now? Who knows. They want it. I'm requesting it. If I can get students interested in reading one type of book, I can get them interested in reading other kinds. So "Wimpy Kid" it is.

Without your help this resource will not be available to my students.
