Trying to inspire students to create Japanese poetry can be challenge without the accompanying art materials!
My students attend a public junior high located in southern California.
They are a fantastic group of kids who come to school everyday ready to learn. They are such a hard-working group of kids. I can honestly say, I have fun teaching five classes worth of 30+ teenagers. I know, teenagers!
My Project
I try to bring the history unit of Ancient Japan to life though lessons on Japanese poetry. My students learn to write haikus. Since haikus are about nature and the beauty of nature we go outside to be inspired and write poems. After writing the poems, we illustrate them using watercolors and chalk. I have requested quality watercolor paper and corresponding colored pencils for students create quality pieces of art.
The art materials that I have requested will enhance my student's experience of creating original Japanese style poetry.
Instead of typing up a poem in Microsoft Word, students will have the opportunity to express themselves in a creative way through watercolors
