"Movies are art and the spirit of the movie depends on the creators." - Film Director Lloyd Kaufman. This is what I want my students to understand about film.
My students attend a public charter school for pregnant and parenting teens.
Most of them have not been exposed to the fine arts, however, they do need a fine arts class in order to graduate. Our school has decided to offer an introduction to film studies class.
My Project
This book, Ed Sikov's Film Studies: An Introduction, discusses many aspects of film. My students will learn about mise-en-scene, camera movement, cinematography, editing, sound, special effects, genres, screenplays, and filmmakers. The book also discusses classic films, such as The Jazz Singer, Rear Window, Do the Right Thing, Casablanca, and many others. It is easy to read and filled with creative critical thinking projects. My students will learn what goes into making a film and how to appreciate films.
I want to offer my students something different.
I want to expose them to the fine arts and show them how the fine arts can enrich their lives. They love movies. I believe I can hold their interest and expand their worlds, as well, with this film course.
