Many of my students live in homes where there is stress throughout their day. It is hard for them to relax and focus. Yoga would provide them with the opportunity to get away from these troubles and relax for a period of time. Taking time to focus would help them concentrate on their studies.
My students are kindergarten age special education students.
They have a variety of disabilities including autism, developmental delays, emotional disabilities, other health impairments and cognitive delays. My students live in a high poverty area. My classroom is in a public school in Illinois. Some of my students attended a half-day Pre-K special education classroom, but others haven't had previous schooling experiences. My students love school, experimenting and learning through hands-on materials. They love their friends and teachers. Since they come from a high poverty area, their previous life experiences have been limited. Being a member of this classroom family gives them a chance to spread their wings, meet new people and try new things. They are all sweeties! I know if you could meet them you would love them as much as my Para-educator and I do.
Have you ever been stressed out and needed an outlet? How about trying a little Yoga to get your mind and body in the right place! These books, CDs, and kits will allow my students the opportunity to relax their bodies and minds in a safe and age appropriate setting. Some of my students are very active and have difficulty turning off their motors so they can concentrate. I feel that introducing them to relaxation exercises will help their minds unwind so they can focus and develop better recall strategies.
Developing simple strategies to get through a stressful minute or day is something we all need in our lives.
I am hoping to give my students strategies that will work for them in any situation. Simple Yoga exercises will give them the tools they need to employ these strategies at school and at home. They will become more creative and thoughtful through the exercises, breathing and stretching.
