Photography is a wonderful way to ignite a student's ability to write and to learn about their communities and themselves. This year I would love to use photography in my 9th grade English & Global Studies High School self-contained, all boys, Special Education Class. I plan on using digital cameras throughout the year. Sample projects include: 1. English/Literacy: Exploring Emotions. Students will take self-portraits expressing one chosen emotion (excited, happy, sad, frustrated, pleased, angry). We will print an 8 X 10 of their best shot and students will write about a time that they felt that particular emotion. During this exercise students will also use a thesaurus to come up with synonyms for the emotion that they chose. Students will then work in pairs and write a response to each other's work. We will compile all photos and images to make a book on emotions. Young men sometimes have problems expressing their emotions and this will be an engaging and great opportunity for them to do so. 2. Global Studies: What will this mean 1000 years from now? As we explore archaeological remains from the past, our class will take a look at what future generations would be able to tell about us based on what we leave behind. We will explore our communities and photograph many things such as writings on walls, signs, public phones, cell phones, cars, garbage, etc. Students will use their imagination and photograph anything that they feel will be relevant to understanding our society as we live in it today. Students will choose one or two images to write about. They will write from the perspective of an anthropologist in the year 3006 trying to understand civilization during the early part of the 21st century. These are just two of many projects that I will use all year.
