I am hoping to get a class set of the graphic novel "Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood" by Marjane Satrapi. "Persepolis" is an outstanding memoir that portrays the Iranian revolution through the eyes of a smart, sassy girl who lived through it. I have a single copy of the book that I loan to students who repeatedly tell me it is the best (and sometimes the only) book they have ever read.
Four sections of ninth graders in Oakland (about 100 kids) will read this book in class. We'll study the history of Iran and the rise of the Islamic Fundamentalist movement in the Middle East. We'll closely examine Satrapi's compelling black and white art, and try some ourselves. Students will engage with complex concepts such as Imperialism, Marxism, and strategies of revolution, assisted by a text that is rich in art and ideas, but simple in language. We'll finish the unit with the students writing some of their own autobiographies, modeled on Satrapi's fascinating style.
Most importantly, I think, teenagers love to read this book. Although the Iran of 1979 seems foreign, it's simultaneously real and gritty and very familiar. My students get excited about this book and don't want to put it down.
