Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
While working as an Americorps volunteer at an education nonprofit in Washington, DC, I worked on a project called Literacy Through Photography (LTP). The program puts cameras into the hands of children so they can use their own photographs as inspiration for creative writing. In my months of working on the project, I watched dozens of students transform from reluctant writers who lacked a sense of ownership over their work, to expressive writers and photographers who took heartfelt pride in their work.
I now teach 7th grade English Language Arts at a low-income school in Spanish Harlem. Most of my students openly tell me that they hate writing because they think it's too difficult and/or boring. I would love to implement the LTP program with my current students so we can work toward changing these attitudes and perceptions.
The project begins with discussions of how to ?read?photographs. Students will gain an understanding that photographers make choices about lighting, angles, etc. to communicate a message about their subject. Each student will then borrow a camera for three-four days and be asked to take pictures centered on a chosen theme of self, family, community, or dreams. Once developed, students will complete a variety of writing activities- from poetry, to narratives, to nonfiction- using their photos as creative inspiration. I have found that students become truly invested in their writing when they are telling the stories or messages behind the photos they have created. Their writing comes to life because they begin to see it as a means of expression to voice otherwise unshared insights?instead of just another assignment.
Finally, students choose a favorite photograph to have enlarged and write about. They mount their work on display boards, and the school hosts an ?exhibit opening,?featuring student performances and a gallery viewing of their photographs and written work. The opening serves as an opportunity to welcome families and community members to gather in celebration of the students?work, and strengthen vital home-school connections.
Please help me lead my students to discover their writing voices through this unique and meaningful project. Our school does not have room in its budget to purchase any cameras, so I am asking for your help in purchasing three digital cameras that will rotate among the students. My school has given me permission to pilot the project with 30 students to begin with, and I hope to grow the project in the future. Thank you for your consideration.
