P369K @ P67 is an elementary Special Education program in Fort Greene, Brooklyn that serves students diagnosed with autism as well as students with severe emotional disturbances, behavioral challenges, and other learning disabilities. Our school is located amid several housing projects, within which many of our students reside. Many of our pupils are children who have never left the inner-city streets, who lack positive encouragement and expectations, and oftentimes true support or guidance. They live among impoverished conditions devoid of many aspects of successful growth and childhood development that many children take for granted. My vision is to create a digital photography program within our school. My goal, to start, is ten digital cameras. This will allow our twenty classrooms to share one camera for every two classes, which is approximately one camera shared between 12 to 24 children. I strongly feel that fostering an interest in the arts can offer these children an essential chance at future success. Seeing the excitement in all of our children when they share something they've created, and actually witnessing how their spirits are strengthened as they receive encouragement and praise for such creative endeavors, is why I believe that such a program can offer endless opportunities for academic and personal growth. With photography, our students would be able to capture the images of their own environment, and they might be able to see some beauty in the harsh world that surrounds them. Along with the art education provided by this project, digital cameras would allow our children to acquire important computer and technology skills that will prepare them for the every-changing world. The combination of art appreciation, technology, and self esteem that can potentially be fostered through this program would provide a long-lasting impact on many children with very special needs. This would allow them to grow and to learn, giving them a chance to enjoy many of the experiences other children do. I thank you for taking the time to review this proposal, and I encourage you to consider what a terrific opportunity this is to truly make a difference in the lives of many children who need so much support.
