Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
This year, instead of the "fun" but perhaps not-so-meaningful holiday party, my class is going to learn how to knit... and then use that skill to create scarves for people in their community that need them.
I teach bilingual 6th grade at a school on the tip of Manhattan. Some of my students have been in the country for little more than days; some were born here. There is a diversity in abilities and learning styles of my students and I have found that service projects particularly engage them. While many would see my students as the "needy" ones, it's most powerful for them to see themselves as agents of change. I want my students to feel the satisfaction of learning a new skill and sharing the product of that labor with others.
Knitting, far from mundane or non-academic, has myriad social studies, historical, and mathematical links to the curriculum. Thus, we will use the activity both as a fun reward and a way to integrate our academic work.
The materials needed for the project are simple: knitting needles and yarn. Of course, each student will need their own set of knitting needles and enough yarn to complete a scarf to donate.
I look forward to seeing my students' pride as they master this new skill and their satisfaction as they share their work with their community.
