Inclusive Classroom Library!
Funded Sep 3, 2021Thank you so much for supporting reading in our classroom! With this project, students now have a wide variety of text to choose from in the classroom library. In addition, many students who never saw themselves in book characters before, now feel represented. I use the books as mentor texts for my shared reading lessons, which engage the students like never before! Students from several countries have made personal comments to me about how they love seeing their culture represented in books I display, read aloud and share with the class. It has been so great to have rich text that affords students an opportunity to relate to book characters in ways they never have before.”

Funded Jul 23, 2021My students were thrilled when they received their materials! They loved that they were able to choose the book bag that they liked the best. These book bags are used every single day by students! They use them to organize and hold their independent reading books, which they read from daily. They make storing their books much easier, especially since they hang on hooks in the classroom!
The students also use their math journals daily. These have been great! They are spiral reviews, so it's great for all students. We have been able to have great conversations about topics we have previously covered, as well as discuss new concepts that are still to be taught in the future! The students love that they have their own journals, too. They write in them daily and check their work. They enjoy flipping back through to see their progress from each week.”

Funded Jun 28, 2021Thanks to this project, my students have been able to have a wide selection of books from which to choose during self-selected reading time. They have been so excited to view the titles, check out the book covers and explore new genres thanks to this project. I have been able to teach my young learners third grade reading standards using high quality, diverse books! When teaching standard RL3.1, I was able to use several of the books from this project alone to introduce this standard. Students who come from diverse backgrounds are particularly appreciative of feeling represented by the characters in several of these books. In my classroom, reading begins with a shared reading lesson. During this mini-lesson, I use grade-level text to teach the standard. Students dive into the text alongside me, as we read and focus on reading comprehension. From there, my students jump into guided reading groups and reading workshop. This is another time where students have been utilizing the new texts! Students have book bags they LOVE to fill. They choose 2 fiction and 2 non-fiction texts each week. They have assignments to complete using the texts, but other times, they read just for pleasure! Thank you again, so much!”
