  • AP Art Students Need More Art Exposure- What is Theme?

    Funded Apr 7, 2011

We were so excited to get our final shipment of books! It's not only the AP design kids showing interest, but students at all levels and even study hall have been picking up the large colorful volumes on my desk and asking about them. The ap kids only have a few days left, and no more grades, but they are so riveted they are pouring over them right now.

These books will enrich my classroom and the 200 kids I serve every year for the next 16 years. Great art is never outdated, which is why I prefer books like this to textbooks. Thanks again, from the bottom of my grateful hear”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Martin

  • Back To Art Basics! AP Art Kids Hit The Books.

    Funded Mar 27, 2009

Thank you so much for these books and the Poster set. We are already using them constantly as the year ends. My first AP class ever turns in their portfolios for college credit in a few weeks!

This will make a daily difference in my AP class, and for many more AP classes to come. For some students, its their only AP class, so you are really helping them continue their education past high school. I think my students are very impressed with the idea that you (whom they don't even know) really care about them and their success, enough to spend money directly out of your own pocket. Perhaps it will inspire them to do the same when they are adults!

Please accept our gratitude, and best wishes,”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Martin

  • AP Art History Needs Books!

    Funded Jan 30, 2009

You have now made AP Art History possible at our school. One more AP class available for students in these current economic times is a tremendous gift. This will make a huge difference to kids whose families are concerned about the cost of college. They will arrive at college with three credits already under their belt!

In addition, the humanities knowledge about western culture will be an invaluable experience for our kids, many of whom are first or second generation Americans. You are truly helping to build a common American culture.”

  • Photo Class Curates Exhibits for Administration & Public

    Funded Jan 31, 2009

I had no idea how high quality this digital picture frame was when I ordered it, but it's stunning, and the image quality is wonderful. It also auto rotates, just like an iphone.

Right now I just put a bunch of the students' work on it, and put it on display in the frame in the guidance office. Kids are choosing their classes for next year, and the frame is labeled with "WAHS PHOTO department". Hopefully it can be in use all the time!

In the meantime, all the kids are putting together theme ideas. They then put out a "call for entries" online, (I have a private message board) collect entries from other kids in other sections, and vote on the best ideas.  They also think the frame is GORGEOUS.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you! this will continue to be used by my students as long as it functions! Several secretaries asked when the show may 'visit' their offices.  ”

  • Advanced Placement Students Learn to Think Creatively!

    Funded Sep 17, 2008

I am so excited to be able to offer these supplies to my students. We do many digital things, but as an artist, I know that a different part of the brain is kicked into gear when we use our hands. My students are really stumped by problem solving and open ended solutions, and the time we'll spend gathered around a table making these together, instead of at the computers with our backs to each other will be well spent. The books will be a resource that we'll use for years. I am truly grateful and excited”

I teach photography in a school of 3,400 students. It is one of the biggest high schools in Illinois. We are a high minority enrollment school, and one of the nicest things about our school are the many, comfortable inter-racial friendships. In the last four years I have rebuilt the digital arts program, and it has become incredibly popular. The number of sections have almost doubled (new teachers had to be hired) and there is now an AP photo class. We work with digital and film cameras, and do hands on and digital design projects. Last year's AP kids all placed in the top 25% nationwide. We are proud of our great students.
