The Hunger Games: We Need Books
Funded Dec 16, 2011Thank you so much! You have given my students book they would not have been able to procure otherwise and opened up a whole world to them. But more than that, what they will gain in ability to critically analyze and to infer meanings about people and situations, they will take those skills with them their entire lives. We will all benefit from an educated, literate society.
With a budget shortfall for education affecting millions of students, your generosity has side-stepped that stumbling block for my students. They love this book! Their first writing scores have already risen significantly. They are more willing to tackle substantial, complex writing prompts and think their way through an issue in depth. Reading has opened their minds to a greater reality.
My students are like toddlers in a candy store with this book! In this poverty-area school, textbooks get written on and damaged in many ways quickly. But these 30 HUNGER GAMES novels are still in pristine condition, even after being handled by six classes a day, approximately 150 students every day. To further underscore how much they love these books, four went "missing" right away for the weekend and were returned mysteriously the next Monday in perfect condition. Students cannot afford to buy the books, so they "borrowed" the books to read them! What you have done for my students is amazing...our state scores just came back and my classes passed at 94%.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Lawton
