  • Oculus: Step Into Virtual Reality!

    Funded Sep 20, 2018

The impact this project has had on my students has been astronomical. I wanted the headsets for my students because I wanted to be able to provide them with experiences and opportunities they wouldn't normally have. It has also encouraged my students to take new perspectives other than their own.

Through this project, my students have traveled the world. They have been aboard the Titanic, hidden with Anne Frank, toured the planets and their moons, and so much more. They have also gotten over their fear of heights and rollercoasters by constructing and riding their very own.

I can't wait for the next school year. Half of my students will be looping with me for 5th grade and will get to further their worldly experience with the virtual reality headsets.

Thank you so much for your generous donations. We could not be happier!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Horton

  • Oh, for the Love of Literacy!

    Funded Dec 2, 2015

My students were jumping for joy when their boxes of books, audio books, and CD players arrived! When I had the idea for this project, my students and I researched different books to ensure we were getting books 6th graders wanted to read. While our project was posted, my students and I tracked the progress of the donations. Once our items shipped, we counted down until the boxes arrived. It felt like Christmas! My students were incredibly antsy waiting for me to sort and label all of the items.

I grew up with an undying love for reading. It has always been a goal of mine to instill that love for reading in my students. By having my students research the books to order, they were creating a sense of ownership. When the books arrived, my students and I watched the book trailers and read the summaries. They decided which book they wanted to read first and were placed into reading groups. They read their books every day and listened to them on Fridays. They were assigned jobs in their groups and had to find vocabulary, make connections, write summaries, and participate in group discussions. These book discussions were student led. It was amazing to see my students take ownership and watch them actively participate in group discussions.

I cannot thank our donors enough for their generous donations. Although I am moving to another grade level, this books will still be used in my new classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Horton

  • Bring Some Wonder Into Their Lives

    Funded Dec 3, 2014

My students were incredibly excited to receive our 30 copies of Wonder! They were so shocked by the generous donations made from all of you.

I decided to begin the year with a class read-aloud. My students are busy writing character analysis essays about August Pullman. At the end of the book they will write another essay about how the main character has grown and changed. My students will also complete a culminating dodecahedron book project.

My students were excited to read a book they could relate to. The biggest lesson I hope for my students to learn from this book is that 'it's what's on the inside that counts.'”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Horton

  • Escape Into a Good Book!

    Funded Aug 10, 2014

The books I received have had a tremendous impact on my classroom and students. When I explained to my students what I did and all the books we were receiving, they were super excited! They looked forward to receiving the packages just as much as I was.

My students read their Truman Award book everyday for at least 20 minutes. We have made it a goal for each student to read a minimum of four Truman books this year. A few of my students made a personal goal to read all 12 of the Truman books. I have also been reading and discussing the books along with my students.

These books have opened the eyes of my students into new worlds. The books have such a variety to them and they have really brought my students out of their comfort levels. My students are choosing books they would have never thought to pick up.

I can not thank my donors enough for their generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Horton

Virtual reality is the next best thing to actually being present. Technology is now firmly rooted in the education environment. The headsets would provide multi-sensory learning experiences which foster innovation, communication, collaboration, and creativity skills. The virtual reality headsets would be used throughout the entire school year for any learning experiences/activities that would tie into the curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to go on virtual field trips and examine areas and events that would be unavailable to them by any other means. Students with disabilities will be able to participate in experiments or learning environments that are not possible in the real world. During our unit on community, students will take on the role of a person from different cultures and travel to their countries and experience their customs first hand. Finally, students will gain new perspectives. For example, students will walk through a water molecule, explore it in detail and become familiar with its parts. The impact of this grant would be astronomical for our students. The student needs driving this grant is the fact that our students lack experience and the means to gain that experience. We can ask our students to research and Google ancient civilizations; however, what an experience it would be for our students to actually be walking around Mesopotamia and witness the earliest cities being built! Students could travel to the depths of the ocean and swim alongside anglerfish all while learning about habitats. Virtual reality motivates students and encourages active participation. It offers the possibility of learning to be tailored to learners’ characteristics and personal needs.
