  • Make it Stick: Using Sticky Notes to Annotate Text

    Funded Aug 13, 2013

Thank you for donating the post-it's to my students. It was such a relief to be able to give give them as many notes as they needed or wanted!

We used them while reading the graphic novel, Persepolis. The post-it's were particularly helpful during the analysis of the author's illustrations. They also used them for close readings for Edgar Allan Poe's short stories and poetry. Next semester, we will use them during our reading of The Complete Maus. It was wonderful for the students to be able to "mark up" their books, and they loved having so many different colors and sized notes to chose from.

Thank you again for your thoughtful donation.”

  • Make Ninth Grade Sparkle!

    Funded Sep 3, 2013

Thank you so much for donating so many art supplies to my students.

My students have made flip books with the supplies and used the glitter glue for a poster project. The pink glitter was an especially big hit. We also used the glue sticks to make collages on community (sorry, I forgot take pictures for this one!). Next semester, the supplies will come in especially handy when they produce their Shakespeare projects. The art supplies you donated helped my students' work seem more polished (and fun).

Thank you again for your kindness.”

  • Home Away From Home

    Funded Jul 26, 2013

Thank you for donating the cocoon floor cushion. My students were so excited when it was delivered!

Often the first thing students do when entering the classroom is ask for permission to sit on the bean bag. It has become a great way to motivate my students or cheer them up if they are having a bad day. They are always saying how much they love it!

Often they will read a book or complete classwork on it. My advisory girls love piling up on it and sharing secrets (I think 5 is the most that has manged to squeeze onto it). Thanks again for being so generous.”

  • Tickle Us With An ELMO (Document Camera)

    Funded Apr 17, 2009

Thank you so much for donating the Elmo document camera to my classroom.

The students have really gotten a kick out of it. It has made peer editing a pleasure. Many students who did not enjoy peer editing love using the Elmo, and others who disliked sharing their work aloud are more than willing to share their work using the Elmo.

Also, it has been a great use for me in modeling lessons for the students. For example, the students could watch me and see what Cornell notes I took during a presentation. I can't wait to use this a set backdrop during Romeo&Juliet this year.

Thanks again for helping my students!”

  • Breaking News Desktops Desperately Needed

    Funded Apr 17, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my students.

Having the two computers located in my classroom has made it much easier for my afterschool students to work on the newspaper. Also, it has been very helpful in my regular English classes. Now when students finish work early, they can go to the back and type up their papers. It's a great motivator for students who complete assignments early! They've also used the website Freerice.com and are improving their vocabulary and donating rice to those in need.

Now that I have the two dedicated computers, I have also started a newsletter for the elective class I teach, AVID (a college prep course). Their parents receive important information about project due dates, what we are working on in class, and general information about applying to college.

Thanks again for enriching my students' lives.”

  • Building a Bridge Between English and Spanish

    Funded Mar 4, 2009

Thank you for your generous donation to my students.

They love the audio listening center, and it is a nice reward for students who are working hard. They are also really enjoying the new books. Some of their favorites are Letters to My Mother, Saving Grace, and Sticks & Stones. Two of my beginner ELL's checked out the Spanish editions of Saving Grace and Sticks & Stones. It's wonderful that they can discuss the books with their friends who have read the book(s) in English. It has been a lovely thing to see.

Again, thank for taking an interest in my students and making their time in my classroom more enjoyable.”

  • Keeping It Real - Books for Teens

    Funded Feb 25, 2009

Thanks so much for your kind donation. It is because of donors like you that my classroom has books that my students are excited to read.

My students love the new books! There is already a waiting list for The Coldest Winter Ever, A Rose Grows From Concrete, and The Game. I also have five students reading the Orca Sounding series. One of these students, Victor, hated reading. It was always a struggle to find something to grab his interest, and now he is checking out books to read at home. He is on his third book in the series.

Thanks for making independent reading a pleasurable time for my students.”

  • Exploring Careers Beyond the Basketball Court

    Funded Jan 31, 2009

Thank you so much for taking an interest in my students. They have enjoyed reading the Career World Magazine. We've been able to read about some very unusual careers and career paths. Some of the careers that students have expressed interest in after reading about them are audio engineer, sports physical therapist, web designer, and professional blogger.

There are also a lot of helpful tips for them. We recently created a goals collage after reading an article about them in the magazine. The students really enjoyed creating and presenting them. Students in my other classes often come by and look at them, so it is a nice positive reinforcement.

Thanks again for your gift to my students.”

  • Help Us Crack The Case!

    Funded Feb 8, 2009

Thank you so much for bringing this forensics unit to life.

My students are having so much fun with it. So far, we've examined evidence collection, handwriting analysis, and fingerprint identification. They loved the fingerprint identification activity! They identified the characteristics of their own fingerprints (whorl, arch, looped, etc.) and then examined fingerprints to solve a mini-mystery.

We have a lot more fun labs coming up thanks to you! Next week we're going examine DNA for hair analysis and conduct chromatographic analysis. The one that everyone is really looking forward to the blood splatter activity. The students are also excited to conduct a full length mystery and have already written their own murder mysteries.

We have been able to examine a wide variety of nonfiction information texts, as well. Several students are also reading about forensics now during independent reading. Once again, thank you so much for taking an interest in my students. You have really helped to make this a memorable unit.”

  • Let There be Color!

    Funded Dec 12, 2008

Thank you so much! This is fantastic news. It will be so wonderful to have the wireless color printer and digital camera. This will make all the difference for our newspaper club. I can't wait to start printing out pages with the color ink. Again, thank you for your generosity”
