The materials I am requesting will be put to good use in our classroom library. Currently, the majority of our classroom library consists of fictional texts. The limited non-fiction texts that are in the library are old and of little interest to my students. My students become excited about science and social studies topics they are exploring in class. I want to be able to take advantage of their desire to know more and extend their learning by providing rich, engaging, and current informational texts. Requested titles include National Geographic Kids, Home of the Brave, If Sharks Disappeared, Earthquakes, Predator Attack, and the Nancy Akhavan Noteworthy Nonfiction Collection. Books can be sorted and organized with the plastic blue bins. By offering a set of high-quality informational texts at a variety of reading levels, I hope to engage my students in the joy of non-fiction reading. Throughout the year, they will learn strategies for tackling non-fiction, and I hope they will be able to practice these strategies with a new set of books!
