Organizing Creative Resources
Funded May 13, 2019I'm so excited to have received a sketchbook for each of my students 3rd through 5th grade. The kids are using it for pre-planning, practice, exploration, reflection, and journaling. With the donation of the organizational bins, my classroom will stay organized and students will be able to be independent in the classroom, finding their sketchbook easily. We already have a great system set up for retrieving the sketchbooks for each class. I greatly appreciate you sharing your resources with our classroom.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Craig Newmark Philanthropies and 2 other donors.Organizing Creative Resources
Funded Jan 10, 2019My students were just gifted sketchbooks for all of the 3rd grade and 4th grade this year. This sketchbook will stay with them in the Art Studio for the rest of their years at Hassan Elementary. I'm very excited about this because we will really see the growth of students learning as their skills improve over the years. We will also have good documentation of what students have learned in the last three years of school.
After receiving the donation from our parent group for the sketchbook, the next obstacle was how to store the books and keep them organized and accessible to the students. That is where this Donors Choose request developed. Thank you so much for the storage container for our sketchbooks. This will most certainly keep us organized in the Art Studio.”

Making It! Billy Kheel as Visiting Artist!
Funded Dec 6, 2018Thank you so much for your contribution to a Visiting Artist. Our students thrived learning from a working Artist and it also was helpful that Billy Kheel is famous! Your support gave life to a very BIG idea!
I invite all of you to visit Hassan Elementary to see the final installation in a couple of weeks. We will be placing it in the 5th-grade stairwell. I know this will be a talking point for years to come.
To give you a little more look into this project, I invite you to visit http://minimatisse.blogspot.com/2019/03/billy-kheel-crow-river-project-at.html”

Their Own Voice
Funded Nov 30, 2016In my classroom, I try to use technology as a support to the hands-on learning that they are doing. We use an app called Seesaw and this allows students to communicate their learning throughout the day with their parents. It works a little like Facebook, in that the students can post something and the parents get a notification in real time. I have been using it to post images of their artwork thus far, but now I am using the headphones to allow students to speak into the microphone to share their art with their own voice and words. Another way that the headset has helped out is to allow my students to learn at their own pace. Students watch a series of videos with their headphones. This way they can stop, replay, and forward the information to meet their individual needs.
My students love to hear their own voice! Sometimes after recording, I will take the videos and show them to the rest of the class. Because of the microphone portion of the headset, students stories are loud and clear. Students who normally don't like to raise their hand and share are heard by allowing them to record on their own and share digitally.
All students have found benefit in the new headsets in my classroom. I find that students are more willing to share if they can record first. I also love the art advocacy that is coming from allowing students to record and share with parents. Families have no question as to what students are learning in class. The headsets have helped my students and my program out in so many ways.”

Stylus Pens And Headphones
Funded Oct 29, 2015A couple of months ago you funded a project for me. I requested stylist and headphones for my class to use with already existing materials (iPads). I was surprised how quickly the project was funded, and even more surprised to find out how fast the materials came to us. It was such a great experience for our first project request. I'm excited to share with you the ways these great additions to my classroom has impacted my students.
I teach 750 students and for EVERY class that visited the Art Studio and used the stylist, the classes ALL had the same reaction. I heard things like, "WHAT?", "Ooh!!", "My grandma/sister/dad has one of those.", "I have always wanted to use one of those things." It brought a smile to my face every time. My students also appreciated the fact that the items were donated. I explained about donors choose and how it works and for some classes, I (we) got a round of applause.
The kids use the stylist for creation, and drawing apps. I like it because they are creating with technology but still working on fine motor skills which they use for writing, cutting and manipulation. These are skills that I'm seeing decline in this young generation and everything we can do to support using more than a finger swipe is critical.
The headphones have come in handy for two applications. I have QR codes throughout the room with some assignments. Students are able to create and learn at their own pace by scanning the codes and listening to new instruction. I have also used them for some of my students to record their voices for reflections on learning and stop motion animation productions.
We thank you very much for the new products provided in this grant. The are helping enrich my students classroom experience.”
